Foster undergraduate research opportunities that enrich students’ practical understanding of chemistry in order to prepare them for advanced studies in the sciences.       

 

Teach students polymer, sol-gel, and vapor-phase fabrication techniques to prepare nanoarchitectured materials:

• colloidal crystals
• inverse opals
• aerogels
• nanopipes
•  
• Electrochemically test nanomaterials as battery, capacitor, and fuel cell electrodes that rapidly discharge and re-charge
•  
• Characterize the physical properties of these nanomaterials with:
  • electron and atomic force microscopies
  • nitrogen porosimetry
  • X-ray diffraction
  • thermal analyses
  • X-ray, UV-Vis, and FTIR spectroscopies
