CIRRUS, the Chemistry Internet Resource for Research by Undergraduate Students, is a web-based service hosted by the PLU Chemistry Department. It was begun in 1994 as part of an NSF grant to Dean Waldow (Associate Professor), Craig Fryhle (Professor), and Laura McGinnitie (formerly Assistant Professor in Physics/Enginnering). The same grant also bought our two Silicon Graphics workstations and an operating system upgrade for our 300 MHz FTNMR. Since 1994 CIRRUS has become a valuable resource for undergraduates around the country (even the world) who seek summer research experiences in chemistry.
Each year until now, Dean Waldow has manually updated the listing and information about nationwide opportunities for undergraduate research in chemistry. Just recently Dean converted CIRRUS to an automated and searchable web database service. Sponsors of undergraduate research programs (e.g. NSF sponsored programs, etc.) can now post information to CIRRUS themselves. Submitters can edit and update their information using a password-protected interface to CIRRUS. Students can search for undergraduate research opportunities by state, keyword, etc.
CIRRUS also contains lots of other useful information undergraduate research in chemistry and pertinent links. Please check it out! I think you'll be impressed with the first-class service Dean is providing for the entire chemistry undergraduate research community.
