Student Affiliates ACS Chapter Activities, Events, and Programs:
1999-2000 in Review
by Jeffery R. Schultz, Assistant Professor
July 12, 2000
The 1999-2000 year for the Pacific Lutheran University Chemistry Club
can best be described by the following quote, "If opportunity doesn't knock,
build a door" (Milton Burrow). The club started off running with activities
and events and didn't stop until the school year was over. In fact, the
club was somewhat like that pesky little mole that will not stop tunneling,
overcomes barriers and traps, and makes a lasting impression. This past
year has been marked by significant student commitment to make the club
an important and integral component of the Department of Chemistry by offering
interesting, unique, and collaborative programming.
Activities that the club sponsored or participated in were many and
varied. Events included:
-
Member recruitment at the September Student Involvement and Activities
Fair;
-
An ACS Career workshop
-
A campus-wide National Mole Day Celebration including "mole" cake, dirt,
and raffle in October
-
Developing chemical demonstrations for a middle school outreach program
-
A presentation on clinical investigations in December
-
PLU Arrow Day and ice cream-making;
-
Set-up, ice cream-making and judging at the PLU/Intel South Sound Regional
Science Fair in February
-
The PLU 5K Lute Loop 2000 Run/Walk on April 1
-
The mildly-popular Ethanol Appreciation Day in May.
Other programs found club members:
-
Attending several ACS Puget Sound section symposia throughout the year
-
Producing an e-mail club newsletter
-
Attending and presenting at both the
-
and having many fun and unique planning meetings.

Next time you are in Rieke Science Center, check out the Chemistry Club bulletin
board and the pictures on display from the "Year of the Mole" activities as put
together by Erica Hunter. Check out the club's website (www.chem.plu.edu/chemclub/)
for more information on upcoming events. Also, please feel free to contact Jason
Higbee (higbeejl@plu.edu) with any ideas
for programs or if you would like to present a seminar or lead a discussion. The
Chemistry Club members are looking forward to an even more active and productive
2000-2001 as the legend of the "mole" continues into the new "Molennium".
