Congratulations to Patrina Pellet (Senior Chemistry and Biology Major)

Patrina Pellet (Senior Chemistry and Biology Major) was named one of twelve outstanding young scientists who received a very significant National Institute of Health scholarship. This scholarship funds students who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, or social science health-related research. She will receive up to $20,000 per year for tuition, educational expenses, and living expenses. She will also have a 10-week summer research experience and a year-long internship, both at NIH in Bethesda, MD.

Congratulations to Dr. Neil Kelleher (Class of 1992)

On June 13th, 2005, PLU chemistry graduate Dr. Neil Kelleher (1992) was named one of the recipients of the 2004 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. This is the nation's highest honor for professional scientists at the onset of their careers. Neil was one of 58 scientists who receive the award at the White House. Dr. Kelleher received the award for his pioneering work on what is called "top-down" proteomics where proteins are analyzed using Fourier transform mass spectroscopy.

Congratulations to Dr. Robert Krieger (Class of 1967)

Robert Krieger (PLU Class of 1967, BS Chemistry; PhD, Cornell, 1970; presently faculty in Environmental Toxicology at UC Riverside), received an award at a symposium in his honor at the the American Chemical Society 229th National Meeting in San Diego, Monday, March 14, 2005. The award symposium was the "ACS International Award for Research in Agrochemicals Sponsored by BASF Corporation: Symposium in Honor of Robert Krieger."

Also, Dr. Krieger was the winner of the Public Communication Award from the Society of Toxicology this spring. (More info)

Faculty Grant Success: Dr. Myriam Cotten

Dr. Myriam Cotten was awarded a Research Corporation Cottrell College Science Award the spring of 2004. Her award has been given a new status (Jan. 2005) and is now designated the "Brian Andreen Cottrell College Science Award." This is an additional honor and includes an extra $5000 for her research. Dr. Dean Waldow Receives "Faculty Excellence in Research" Award

Associate Professor Dean Waldow was recognized by receiving the K. T. Tang Faculty Excellence in Research Award this past December during fall 2003 graduation.   The citation reads:

In a career "characterized by excellence in teaching and ever-increasing national recognition and funding for his research achievements with undergraduates," Dean Waldow has helped place students in prestigious graduate programs throughout the United States. Having garnered external funding for undergraduate research in every year since coming to PLU in 1992, Professor Waldow has received support from nearly all of the major granting agencies for chemistry. With this support, his research students do state-of-the art experiments in nanotechnology and materials science; they report the results of their group's research in papers published in major journals; they give poster presentations here and at other universities; and they pursue successful careers in chemistry. Last summer's polymer chemistry workshop for middle school students in the Minority Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program, engaged students often underrepresented in science and resulted in "glowing reviews." For a career that "represents a highly successful amalgamation of academic research, teaching, and the mentoring of undergraduates," Pacific Lutheran University recognizes Dean Waldow as one of the recipients of the 2003-2004 K. T. Tang Faculty Excellence Award in Research.
